4to Green cloth. 240pp with 144 black & white illustrations. The author, then Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, set out to evoke the people and the ideas that lead to the gardens' creation. He discusses the revolution in garden-making in Jacobean England with the introduction of spectacular fountains and grottos and also touches on some of the great figures of the age. Published here for the first time are the surviving plans, diagrams, views, and engravings of the lost gardens of Tudor and Stuart England. Penciled bookseller's marks to ffep, extremities of pages very slightly yellowed else Near Fine in dustjacket.
