1 Locke, John
"Books seem to me to be pestilent things..."
New York: Gotham Book Mart & Gallery, n.d. (ca 198?) Gorey, Edward
14" x 8-3/4" folded stock printed with Gorey's illustration for and hand lettering of John Locke's comment on the evil spawned by books and booksellers. "Books seem to me to be pestilent things, and infect all that trade in them...with something very perverse and brutal..." The 3.5" x 2-3/4" color image portrays a bleak scene where a sinister character with a satisfied smirk, clutching a large tome to his breast, strides away from a precipice. Behind him can be seen the feet of his unfortunate victim, who is obviously plummeting downward head-first. Fine.
