Maybelle's story is a celebration of the San Francisco cable cars, which Burton knew from early childhood and later rode to art school. Based on a true occurrence, when the city said the cable cars were old-fashioned and must be replaced by modern buses, the people of San Francisco resoundingly said "No!"
