[32]pp. Marcia Brown took a story from the Hitopadesa and gave children her version of this ancient Sanskrit fable. Her retelling is beautifully spare, her woodcuts remarkable. See Bader (pp 321-22) who writes that "...Once a Mouse is important to us...because it is universal in application and, as a picturebook, equally a drama and a work of art."
